Manteo

White was losing faith and was in anguish knowing that soon other attacks might come.  White went with a small group to the island of Croatan.  This is where Manteo was born.  He brought along Manteo who had gone to England with Lane.  He went there after the massacre.

White was nervous on how they would be greeted and how the people of Croatan would react to him and his men.  To his comfort and surprise, the people welcomed them very kindly.  White could easily note the damage that Lane had done as the facts and sights were so obvious.  There were people hurt--including a man that was paralyzed because he was shot.  There were barely any supplies and very little food.  Every person there had a look of fear and pain on their face, I could imagine.

The Croatan told them that the people that had killed George Howe were Wanchese.  The colonists also learned that the other fourteen soldiers that were supposed to be at the fort got aboard their boat and sailed away never to be seen again.  Manteo nor his people could help him at all which must have made White feel even more lost.  Both of the groups could not help each other in any way excepy promise each other that they would "keep the old love that was between us," or so White said. The Croatan also said they would travel with this message to the other Secota towns although they could not promise that it would solve anything.
