The Chowanoc, Weapemeoc, and the Mandoag

Later on, because the English could now mostly understand the Secota language, they would find out that there were two other nations north that were both related to the Secotan-the Chowanoc and the Weapemeoc.  They all had very close friendships.  The leader of the Chowanoc nation (Menatonon) was not mobile in his legs.  However, his disability did not hold him back from having the stronger of the three countries.

To the west of the Secotan lived the Mandoag-a nation of people who were not to be trusted and were feared by all.  They guarded their borders and fought viciously.  One time, Menatonon's son was kidnapped by them and was one of few people who could describe what the Mandoag land was like.

Raleigh's hired men did not pay attention to this as it was not their concern.  All they wanted was Roanoke so they could get their fort.
