Will White Finally See the Colonists?

03/01/2009 19:46

Yes, still in England.  White still was not getting anywhere searching for a ship that was heading near Roanoke and let him come along.  It had been more than a year since the last time he was on that beach and promised his friends and family that he would find a way to save them.  He couldn't do it himself as he had no money.  He spent it on the last trip which ended abruptly in a disaster with pirates.  He lost all faith--all belief--all confidence in finding the lost colonists.  A whole new year passed with still no luck.  He could not possibly still think they had survived that whole time.

Something happened.  There were three ships that were leaving port to go to the Caribbean.  White was excited beyond compare.  Could he possibly get a chance to see the colonists after all--or at least see if they were alive?  But then, the Privy Council all of a sudden confined all ships to port...again.  Right when he needed it.  But to his great surprise, all three of the captains planned on going anyway.  White begged Raleigh to try and propose a deal with the three captains.  Raleigh told them that he would let them leave port if they would take White along with them.  Raleigh sent a letter with the proposition and they both waited anxiously.  The letter was sent to Watts who owned the ships.  Watts was a rich man.  He bacame rich by his shipping.  He was said to be the most notorious of all pirates at sea.  He wore very fancy clothes lavished with jewels and gold.

The three ships he owned were called the Hopewell, the Little John, and the John Evangelist.  The John Evangelist was the supply ship.  The three ships were headed to the West Indies so they could attack the Spanish and steal their plunder.

Soon after, a letter from Watts came accepting their offer.  White was overfilled with joy.  He hurried down to Plymouth Harbor.  While he met the other two captains, he noticed thow they did not approve of him coming with them and they really made it clear.  They both refused to take his new colonists on board nor any supplies.  White was only allowed to take one single chest onboard with him.  This was probably because the captains wanted as much room possible for riches and plunder.

If he boards the Hopewell without supplies how would he be helping them?  He would just condemn himself to the same fate with no food or supplies.  What was he going to do?  He hadn't seen the colonists in three years--that is a long time.  He didn't even know if any of them were still alive.  What if they were and just moved somewhere else and were doing fine?  What if some danger came?  What if.....there were a million "what if's" that could have happened while White was away and there was only one way to find out what really occured while he was absent from Roanoke...he was going to find them no matter what for this might as well be his last chance.
